How do I turn on windshield wipers in Tesla?

In Teslas, windshield wipers are controlled by the left-hand stalk on the steering column. You can use Auto rain-sensing mode or manually select Intermittent, Low, or High speeds, and you can spray washer fluid by pulling the stalk toward you.

Using the wiper stalk

Below are the steps to activate and adjust the wipers manually. The controls are located on the left side of the steering column, near the turn signals. The end of the stalk or a dial on the stalk lets you choose the wipe setting.

  • Locate the left-side steering-column stalk that also handles the turn signals.

  • Rotate the end of the stalk to cycle through wipe modes: Auto, Intermittent, Low, and High (labels may vary slightly by model or software version).

  • Select Auto to enable rain-sensing wipers that automatically adjust speed based on rain intensity.

  • To spray washer fluid, pull the stalk toward you briefly; release to resume wiping, or hold for a longer spray if needed.

Once you know the basic positions, you can quickly adapt to changing weather while driving a Tesla.

Auto rain-sensing and manual overrides

In addition to manual control, Tesla offers an Auto rain-sensing mode that uses cameras and sensors to adjust wipe frequency automatically. If Auto isn’t keeping pace with heavy rain, you can override to Low or High manually using the stalk.

  • Set the stalk to Auto to enable rain-sensing operation.

  • In heavy rain, switch to Low or High if the automatic setting isn’t sufficient.

  • To wash the windshield, pull the stalk toward you for a brief spray, followed by a wipe.

  • If the wipers don’t respond as expected, check for software updates or consult the on-screen help for your specific model and software version.

Note that control labeling and exact stalk behavior can vary slightly by model (Model S/X vs. Model 3/Y) and software version, but the left stalk is the standard control across Teslas.

Model-specific notes

Model S and Model X

For Model S and Model X, the wiper controls are typically on the left stalk. The Auto, Intermittent, Low, and High options apply, and you can spray washer fluid by pulling the stalk toward you. If Auto is active, the system will adjust to rain intensity automatically.

Model 3 and Model Y

Model 3 and Model Y use the same left-stalk approach for wipers. The Auto mode and manual speed options generally appear in the same sequence, with washer spray activated by pulling the stalk toward you. Software updates may refine labeling or sensitivity, but the core controls remain the same.

Summary

Windshield wipers in a Tesla are controlled primarily by the left-side stalk on the steering column. Use Auto for rain-sensing operation or manually select Intermittent, Low, or High speeds. To spray washer fluid, pull the stalk toward you briefly. If you ever can’t find the correct setting, consult your vehicle’s on-screen help or the owner’s manual for your specific model and software version, as layouts can vary slightly between models and updates.
