Which Mustangs have MT82?

The MT82 six-speed manual is used with select Ford Mustang variants, most notably the 2.3-liter EcoBoost models and certain export-market versions. In the U.S. lineup, GT and higher-performance V8 variants have typically relied on Tremec transmissions rather than MT82.

What is the MT82?

The MT82 is a Getrag-produced six-speed manual transmission that Ford has used in several global applications. It is lightweight and designed for higher-rev engines and turbocharged setups, but it is not the standard choice across all Mustang trims. The Mustang’s EcoBoost lineup and some export-market versions have been equipped with MT82, while other U.S. Mustang variants have generally used Tremec transmissions.

Mustang models known to have MT82

Below is a concise list of Mustang configurations that have employed the MT82 transmission in various markets. Note that availability can vary by year, region, and option packages.

  • Ford Mustang EcoBoost (2.3L turbocharged engine) with a six-speed manual transmission in several global markets, starting with the mid-2010s model year range.

  • Export-market Mustangs (including certain UK, European, and Australia/New Zealand examples) with the EcoBoost engine and MT82 manual option.

In practice, the MT82 is most closely associated with the 2.3L EcoBoost Mustang in markets outside the U.S. and in some international EcoBoost configurations. The more common U.S. manual configurations for many GT/V8 variants have used Tremec gearboxes instead of MT82.

How to verify on a specific car

To confirm whether a particular Mustang has MT82, check the vehicle’s build sheet or window sticker for the transmission code, or inspect the transmission housing and serials on the unit itself. VIN decode tools and dealer service literature can also identify the exact gearbox model installed on a given vehicle.

Summary

The MT82 appears most prominently in Mustang EcoBoost models (2.3L) and in certain export-market examples. For U.S. GT and higher-performance V8 variants, Tremec transmissions have been more common. If you’re considering a specific car, verify the transmission model via the VIN or build documentation to be sure of which gearbox is installed.

How much HP will a MT82 handle?

650-750 is doable on pump gas, 800 starts to stress stock fueling system components but I have seen it done.

When did Mustang stop using MT82?

All manual Mustangs from 2011-2020 use the Getrag MT82 transmission. Ford replaced the popular Tremec T5 and TR-3650 used in previous years. Since Ford switched manufacturers, the MT82 has received a lot of criticism due to having several well-known issues.

Which Mustang to stay away from?

The Ford Mustang years to avoid are 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2016 — six model years with documented paint failures, electrical problems, early-production powertrain issues, and above-average repair costs. The 2010 model is the worst of the group.

What Mustangs had the MT82?

Getrag MT82 manual transmissions, found in 2011 and newer Ford Mustangs, are the subject of the class action suit alleging defects and drivability issues. Glad to have my tried and true Tremec TR- 6060 in my 07 GT500 :) That explains it.
