Where is the Jeep hood latch?

The Jeep hood latch is a two-part system: an interior hood-release lever inside the cabin and an exterior latch at the front edge of the hood. The basic layout is the same across most Jeep models, but exact placement and how the hood is held up can vary. To open the hood, release the interior lever, then go to the front to disengage the exterior latch.

Exterior hood latch location

On most Jeeps, the exterior hood latch sits at the front edge of the hood, in the center behind the grille, connected to the radiator support. It engages with a striker on the hood and is released by moving the latch to its release position from the outside.

Wrangler and Gladiator notes

For Wrangler models (including JL and Gladiator), the exterior latch is centered along the hood’s front edge, and you release it after first freeing the hood with the interior lever. On many of these models, the hood is held open by gas struts, so you can lift the hood smoothly once the latch is released.

Other Jeep SUVs

Across other Jeep SUVs such as Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, and Compass, the exterior latch location is similarly at the center front edge of the hood. The interior hood-release lever is on the driver's side under the dash near the kick panel, which you pull to release the latch before going to the front to finish opening.

Note that anti-pinch and secondary safety latches may exist on some variants; the interior lever only releases the primary latch, after which you must unlatch the exterior mechanism before fully lifting the hood.

In some older or specialized models, the hood may be held up by a prop rod rather than gas struts. Do not let the hood fall while opening or closing; always support it if there is no prop rod or gas struts present.

Steps to open the hood (common method)

Follow these steps to safely open a Jeep hood that uses the standard two-latch system.

  1. From the driver’s seat, locate and pull the interior hood-release lever, usually on the left side of the dash near the kick panel or under the steering column.

  2. Walk to the front of the vehicle and locate the exterior hood latch at the hood’s center front edge behind the grille; move the latch to the release position to disengage the hood from the striker.

  3. Lift the hood slightly and release any secondary latch if your model uses one; then lift the hood fully.

  4. Secure the hood with the prop rod or gas struts if your model uses them; ensure the hood is held up securely before inspecting the engine bay.

Following these steps will allow you to safely open most Jeep hoods. If you can’t locate the interior release or the hood won’t open, consult the owner's manual or contact a dealer or mechanic for guidance.

Model-specific notes

While the general layout is consistent, the exact locations and mechanisms can vary slightly by model and year. The Wrangler family (JK, JL, JT) typically follows the same two-part system but may differ in whether the hood is supported by gas struts or a prop rod.

  • Wrangler (JK/JL/JT): Interior hood-release lever on the driver's side under the dash; exterior latch at the hood’s front edge; hood typically held by gas struts on newer models.

  • Grand Cherokee/ Cherokee/ Compass: Similar arrangement; interior release near the left kick panel; exterior latch at the hood front; gas struts on newer variants.

Always ensure the hood is latched securely before driving. If in doubt, refer to the specific owner's manual for your model/year.

Summary

The Jeep hood latch is a two-part system: an interior release lever inside the cabin and an exterior latch at the front edge of the hood. Start by pulling the interior release, then go to the front to disengage the exterior latch and lift the hood. Differences are mainly about whether the hood is held by gas struts or a prop rod and the exact interior release location, which is usually on the driver's side under the dash near the kick panel.
