Is Chrysler Orange antifreeze the same as Dexcool?

No. Chrysler Orange coolant and Dexcool are both orange, long-life, organic-acid-based coolants, but they are not identical formulations and are not guaranteed to be interchangeable. Use the coolant specified by your vehicle’s manufacturer and follow your owner's manual.

What Dexcool is

Dexcool is GM’s orange, silicate-free organic acid technology (OAT) coolant. Introduced in GM vehicles in the 1990s, it is formulated to provide long service life and corrosion protection for aluminum and other metals used in GM engines. The exact inhibitor package is proprietary to GM, and Dexcool is typically recommended for GM vehicles. Mixing Dexcool with other brands or with incompatible coolant types is not advised unless the manual explicitly allows it.

What Chrysler Orange is

Chrysler Orange refers to Mopar’s Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant (color orange), the official coolant used in many Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles. It is also an organic-acid technology coolant designed for extended life and compatibility with Chrysler engines. Like Dexcool, its additive package is tailored to Mopar specifications, and it is not automatically interchangeable with coolants from other manufacturers.

Are they interchangeable?

The following considerations help explain interchangeability and risk:

  • Color alone is not a reliable indicator of compatibility; both are orange but have different chemical formulations and inhibitors.

  • Dexcool and Mopar Orange are both OAT-based, but their inhibitor chemistries are not identical, which can lead to deposits, reduced corrosion protection, or cooling-system problems if mixed.

  • Vehicle manufacturers specify the coolant type for a given engine; using the wrong coolant can affect warranty coverage and cooling performance.

  • If two different brands have already been mixed, a complete cooling-system flush is generally recommended before refilling with the correct coolant.

Bottom line: Do not assume the two are interchangeable based on color. Always follow the vehicle’s manual or consult a dealership or qualified mechanic if you’re unsure. When switching brands, a proper flush and refill with the recommended coolant is often necessary.

What to do if you need to switch

If you’re maintaining a Chrysler vehicle, verify with Mopar documentation whether Dexcool is approved for your specific model and engine. For GM vehicles, Dexcool is typically the specified coolant. When in doubt, consult the owner's manual or a dealer before mixing or replacing with a different brand’s coolant.

Summary: Chrysler Orange (Mopar Extended Life) and Dexcool are both long-life, orange OAT coolants but are not identical. They are designed for their respective brands, and mixing them is generally discouraged. Always use the coolant specified for your vehicle and perform any necessary system flushes if you change brands.
