Bulb types and typical replacements
Understanding which bulb you’re replacing helps you buy the correct part and follow the right steps. For the 2015 Forester, the standard configuration is:
Low-beam bulb: H11
The low-beam lamp sits at the rear of the headlight housing and is designed for steady night driving illumination. Replace with an H11 bulb of your preferred brand and warranty level.
High-beam bulb: 9005
The high-beam lamp is typically a 9005 (HB3) bulb. This bulb is used for high-contrast, long-range lighting and is swapped similarly to the low-beam bulb when needed.
What you’ll need
Before you begin, gather these items so you can complete the job without interruptions.
- Replacement bulbs: one H11 for the low beam and one 9005 for the high beam (if you’re replacing both).
- Clean gloves or a microfiber cloth to handle bulbs without touching the glass.
- Flashlight to illuminate the headlight housing.
- Optional: flat-head screwdriver or prying tool for stubborn dust caps.
Having the right bulbs and tools on hand reduces the chance of dropping parts or damaging fittings and speeds up the job.
Replacing the low-beam bulb
Below are the general steps for swapping out the low-beam H11 bulb. Note that access can vary slightly by trim or engine bay layout, and some Forester models may require moving or removing nearby components for easier access.
- With the hood open, locate the back of the headlight assembly. Remove the rubber dust cap by turning it counterclockwise and pulling it off to expose the bulb and connector.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the bulb by pressing the release tab and pulling straight back.
- Remove the old bulb by either rotating the retaining ring counterclockwise about 90 degrees or releasing the locking clip, depending on your exact housing. Lift the bulb out carefully, avoiding contact with the glass.
- Handle the new H11 bulb by its base only. Do not touch the glass with bare skin; if you do touch it, wipe the glass with a clean cloth or wear gloves.
- Install the new bulb into the housing by aligning the tabs or securing the retaining mechanism, then rotate or clip to lock it in place. Reconnect the electrical plug to the bulb.
- Replace the dust cap by pressing it on and turning clockwise until snug.
- Close the hood lightly and test the low-beam light by turning on the headlights to ensure proper operation and alignment.
After completing the low-beam replacement, verify that the beam is properly aimed and that there are no flickers or moisture inside the headlight housing.
Replacing the high-beam bulb
The high-beam bulb (9005) is usually located in the same headlight assembly. If you’re replacing only the high beam, follow steps similar to the low-beam procedure, focusing on the rear bulb position labeled for high beam.
- Access the back of the headlight assembly and remove the dust cap if needed.
- Disconnect the high-beam electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling the connector away from the bulb.
- Release the high-beam bulb from its retaining mechanism (ring or clip) and remove it carefully.
- Handle the new 9005 bulb by the base, avoiding contact with the glass. Install it by securing the retaining mechanism and ensuring proper alignment.
- Reconnect the electrical connector to the high-beam bulb and reinstall the dust cap.
- Test the high beams by turning them on to confirm brightness and operation.
As with the low-beam bulb, avoid touching the glass and reseal the housing to prevent moisture ingress.
Final checks and tips
Once both bulbs are replaced (if you did both), test both the low and high beams to confirm proper function. If you notice a dim bulb, flicker, or a bulb that won’t light, recheck the connectors and ensure the bulb is seated correctly. If you replaced only one bulb, consider inspecting the other to plan for simultaneous replacement to maintain consistent headlight performance.
