Where is the air filter located in a 2016 Chevy Cruze?

In the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, there are two air filters to consider: the engine air filter located in the engine bay and the cabin air filter located behind the glove box. The engine filter protects the intake from dust and debris, while the cabin filter cleans the air entering the passenger compartment. Here’s where to find them and how to replace them.

Engine air filter location

The engine air filter sits in a rectangular plastic housing in the engine bay. It’s typically near the front of the engine and connected to a duct that leads to the throttle body. The cover is held on by clips or screws, and the filter is replaced from the top of the housing.

  1. Open the hood and locate the engine air filter housing, a rectangular black plastic box usually near the front of the engine bay. A duct or hose will connect it to the intake tract.

  2. Unclip the housing cover or remove the screws/fasteners securing it. Some models use simple snap clips; others use small bolts.

  3. Lift the cover and pull out the old air filter. Take note of the filter’s orientation and the direction of airflow indicated by arrows on the filter.

  4. Clean the inside of the housing with a dry rag to remove loose dirt or debris. Do not use liquids or compressed air inside the housing.

  5. Insert the new air filter in the same orientation as the old one, ensuring a snug fit with no gaps around the edges.

  6. Reattach the housing cover and secure with clips or screws. Make sure the intake duct is properly connected to avoid unfiltered air entering the engine.

  7. Close the hood and start the engine to confirm normal running and that there are no abnormal sounds or warning lights.

Replacing the engine air filter is usually quick, typically taking about 5-10 minutes, and helps maintain engine performance and fuel efficiency.

Cabin air filter location

The cabin air filter for the 2016 Cruze is generally located behind the glove box on the passenger side of the dash. Access requires lowering or removing the glove box to reach a rectangular filter housing behind it. The filter is then replaced by removing its cover and sliding in the new filter.

  1. Stand on the passenger side and locate the glove box. Gently empty it and release any stops or pins that hold it in place if needed.

  2. Lower the glove box to reveal the filter housing behind it. Some models have a damper; press it or squeeze the sides to lower the box fully.

  3. Find the cabin air filter housing cover and remove it. This is usually a simple clip- or screw-secured panel.

  4. Take out the old cabin air filter and note its orientation (airflow arrows should point in the direction of air entering the cabin).

  5. Clean the inside of the housing if you see debris, then insert the new filter in the correct orientation.

  6. Replace the housing cover and re-secure the glove box to its original position.

  7. Test the system by turning on the HVAC and adjusting airflow to ensure smooth operation without unusual odors or noises.

Note: Cabin filter access can vary slightly by trim level. If you cannot locate the filter behind the glove box, consult the owner’s manual or a service guide for your specific configuration.

Summary

In the 2016 Chevy Cruze, there are two air filters to monitor: the engine air filter in the engine bay and the cabin air filter behind the glove box. Regular checks and replacements, according to the vehicle’s manual or when you notice reduced airflow or odors, help maintain engine performance and interior air quality.
