What kind of oil do I use in my Honda lawn mower?

Use a clean, fresh 4-stroke engine oil that Honda approves. For most Honda lawn mowers, this means SAE 5W-30 or SAE 10W-30, API service grade SN or newer, and either Honda-branded oil or another API-certified 4-stroke oil that meets those specifications.

Honda lawn mowers run four-stroke engines that require regular motor oil, and oil should never be mixed with fuel. The exact grade and quantity can vary by model, so always check your owner's manual for the precise recommendation. Below you'll find guidance on typical choices and how to maintain the oil in your mower.

Oil type and viscosity for Honda lawn mowers

Choosing the right oil is essential for protection and performance across seasons. The following options cover the common recommendations you’ll encounter for most Honda small engines:

  • Use a clean, fresh 4-stroke engine oil (do not use two-stroke oil or mix with fuel).

  • API service grade should be SN or newer (e.g., SM, SN, or later) to ensure proper protection.

  • Viscosity commonly recommended: SAE 5W-30 or SAE 10W-30. Use 5W-30 in cold climates and 10W-30 in milder to hot climates, and always verify with your specific model’s manual.

  • Use Honda-brand oil or an equivalent that clearly meets the API requirements stated on the oil label.

  • Oil capacity for many small Honda engines is around 0.42 quarts (0.4 liters); check your model’s manual for the exact amount.

Sticking to these guidelines helps ensure reliable starting, proper lubrication, and long engine life across seasons.

How to check and change the oil

Familiarize yourself with basic oil maintenance to keep your mower running smoothly. The steps below outline common procedures, but always consult your model’s manual for any model-specific twists.

These steps cover typical inspection and oil-change practices for many Honda lawn mowers:

  1. Park the mower on level ground and let the engine cool before checking the oil. Locate the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, then pull it out again to read the level. The oil should be near the Full mark on the dipstick.

  2. To add oil, open the oil fill cap and slowly pour small amounts of oil, rechecking the level after each addition to avoid overfilling.

  3. To change the oil, place a drain pan underneath the mower. If your model has a drain plug/drain bolt, loosen it and allow the old oil to drain completely. If there isn’t a drain plug, you may need to tilt the mower carefully according to the manual’s instructions to drain the oil.

  4. Once drained, reinstall the drain plug with a new washer if required, fill with the recommended oil to the Full line, replace the cap, wipe away any spills, and run the engine for a few minutes before rechecking the level.

Regular oil checks and changes help keep the engine lubricated and performing well, preserving efficiency and prolonging engine life.

Notes for model-specific and climate considerations

Always refer to your specific mower model’s owner’s manual for exact oil type, capacity, and change intervals. Some HRR/HSR/ HRS-series models may have slightly different recommendations or capacities. In addition, climate can influence the preferred viscosity (cold climates favor lighter grades like 5W-30; hot climates may rely on 10W-30). When in doubt, follow the manufacturer’s guidance for your device.

Summary

To keep your Honda lawn mower running smoothly, use a clean 4-stroke engine oil that meets API SN or newer specifications, typically in the viscosities of SAE 5W-30 or 10W-30. Use Honda-branded oil or an equivalent API-certified product, and fill to the Full mark after checking with the dipstick. Perform regular oil checks and changes according to your model’s manual, and adapt viscosity to climate as advised. Always consult the specific manual for model-specific requirements.
