Is the Acura Legend a V8?

The Acura Legend is not a V8. Throughout its production, the Legend used V6 engines, with two generations offering 2.5-liter and 3.2-liter V6s. There was never a factory V8 option.

Overview and context

Launched by Honda’s luxury division in the mid-1980s, the Acura Legend aimed to offer a refined, comfortable mid-size sedan with premium features and solid reliability. In the United States, the Legend carried Acura’s premium branding until it was supplanted by the RL in the mid-1990s. Across its life, the Legend refined its powertrain around V6 engines rather than adopting a V8 layout.

Engine options by generation

Below is a concise look at the two Legend generations and the V6 engines they used. A V8 variant was never offered in this model.

  • First generation (1986–1990): 2.5-liter V6 (engine code C25A), transverse front-engine with front-wheel drive

  • Second generation (1991–1994): 3.2-liter V6 (engine code C32A), continuing the front-wheel-drive layout

In both generations, the Legend relied on V6 powertrains rather than any V8 configuration, delivering a balance of smooth operation and adequate performance for its class.

Notes on engine codes and specs

Engine codes C25A and C32A identify the two V6 platforms used in the Legend. Honda/Acura focused on refined V6 architectures for this model, prioritizing packaging and drivability over the heavier, less efficient V8 designs.

Historical context and current legacy

After its final years, the Legend name was phased out in North America in favor of the RL, which carried the same general market positioning but with updated styling and technology. The Legend’s legacy includes helping establish Acura’s early emphasis on precision engineering, quiet interiors, and comfortable long-distance cruising as hallmarks of the brand.

Summary: The Acura Legend is not a V8. It uses V6 engines across its two generations—the 2.5-liter V6 in the first generation and the 3.2-liter V6 in the second—without ever offering a V8 option. The model paved the way for Acura’s premium sedan lineage before being replaced by the RL in the mid-1990s.
