How to reset CHevy Malibu power steering?

Power steering reset depends on whether the Malibu uses hydraulic or electric power steering. For most model years, you may be able to address minor issues with basic checks and resets; however persistent warnings should be diagnosed by a professional.

Know which system your Malibu uses

Chevrolet has shifted from hydraulic to electric power steering across generations. The reset steps differ: hydraulic systems bleed and refill; electric systems require calibration with a tool. Check your owner’s manual or vehicle identification number (VIN) to confirm the exact setup for your car.

Hydraulic power steering (older Malibu models)

For models with conventional hydraulic power steering, the reset is largely a fluid and air-bleed procedure plus belt condition checks. The steps below assume this type of system.

  1. Park the car on a level surface, engine off, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Locate and check the power steering fluid reservoir. With the engine cool, verify the fluid level and condition, and refill with the fluid specified for your vehicle if it's low.

  3. Bleed the system to remove air: with the engine off, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times, then start the engine and turn the wheel to full left and full right a few times while monitoring fluid level.

  4. Inspect the serpentine belt for wear and proper tension; replace if you hear squealing or see cracking.

  5. Start the engine again, check for leaks, and top off the power steering fluid as needed. Take a short test drive at low speed to confirm soft, assisted steering.

Notes: Use the specific power steering fluid recommended by GM for your model year, and avoid overfilling. If you still notice stiffness, noises, or warning lights, a professional inspection is advised.

Electric power steering (EPS) Malibu models

Newer Malibu generations use electric power steering that relies on sensors and the control module. Resetting or recalibrating EPS frequently requires a scan tool and, in some cases, battery resets. The steps below cover safe basic attempts and when to seek dealer-level service.

  • Ensure the vehicle’s 12-volt battery is in good health (voltage around 12.6 V or higher with the engine off; higher when running). A weak battery can cause EPS fault codes.

  • Try a simple reset by cycling the steering: with the ignition on (engine off or in accessory mode, depending on your car), turn the steering wheel fully left to right a few times to clear minor memory issues.

  • If your car warns “Service Power Steering” or “Steering Assist Fault,” disconnecting the negative battery cable for 10–15 minutes and then reconnect can reset the EPS memory in some cases. Note that doing so may reset other systems (radio code, clock) and should be followed by a period of steering wheel cycles to re-center sensors.

  • For a proper calibration, use a GM-compatible scan tool (GM Tech2, GDS II, or compatible aftermarket tool) to perform EPS initialization and Steering Angle Sensor calibration. This is often necessary after battery disconnects, aftermarket module replacements, or airbag-related work.

  • Check related fuses and wiring: EPS fuse, CAN bus connections, and ground straps. A loose connection can cause intermittent steering faults that resemble a reset need.

Important: If the EPS warning persists after a basic reset and calibration, do not drive aggressively; have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician. EPS faults can affect steering assist and vehicle safety.

What to avoid and when to seek help

Don’t attempt to physically bypass or override EPS protection, and avoid driving long distances with a steering warning light on. Battery resets can erase trouble codes temporarily but do not fix root causes like sensor failure, faulty wiring, or module faults.

Summary

Resetting Chevy Malibu power steering is not one-size-fits-all. For older, hydraulic systems, focus on fluid level, bleeding, belt condition, and leaks. For newer EPS-equipped models, a simple reset may help, but proper calibration via a diagnostic tool is often required. When in doubt, consult a certified technician or Chevrolet service center to ensure safe, accurate calibration and to avoid compromising steering performance.
