How to open gas tank on 2022 Chevy Malibu?

Most 2022 Chevy Malibu models let you open the fuel door from an interior release on the driver’s door. If your car uses a capless fuel system, you may also be able to open the door from the outside with a light press on the exterior panel. Always ensure the vehicle is unlocked and in Park before attempting to open the fuel door.

Where to find the fuel-door release

Chevrolet typically places the fuel-door release near the driver’s seat, either on the door panel (near the window controls) or on the lower dash. Some trims may unlock the fuel door automatically when you unlock the car with the key fob. If you don’t locate an interior release, your Malibu may be using a capless exterior-opening design.

Inside-release options

If your Malibu has an interior fuel-door release, use the switch, lever, or button to unlatch the door, then open it from the outside.

  1. Park the car and set the transmission to Park; ensure the vehicle is unlocked.

  2. Look for the fuel-door release on the driver’s door panel or dashboard—often marked with a fuel pump icon.

  3. Activate the release by flipping, pulling, or pressing it until you hear or feel the latch disengage.

  4. Walk to the left-rear side of the car and locate the fuel door.

  5. Open the door by pulling outward or pressing on the edge to swing it open, exposing the filler neck.

After fueling, close the fuel door securely until it latches.

Capless fuel system or exterior-release method

On models without an interior release, or with a capless filler, open the fuel door from the outside. Capless designs mean there is no traditional gas cap to unscrew.

Exterior-opening steps

Use your hand to press the exterior surface of the fuel door to release the latch, then swing the door open to access the filler neck. You will not remove a cap, just insert the fuel nozzle.

  1. Ensure the vehicle is unlocked and in Park.

  2. Approach the driver’s side rear quarter panel where the fuel door is located.

  3. Press the exterior surface of the fuel door to unlatch it; the door should swing open.

  4. Insert the fuel nozzle and begin fueling (no cap to remove on capless systems).

  5. Close the fuel door firmly after fueling until it latches.

Some trims may automatically unlock the fuel door when you unlock the car with the key fob; if yours doesn’t, use the exterior-release method described above.

Safety tips

Always turn off the engine before fueling, keep the ignition off, and avoid smoking or using electronics near the fueling area. If the fuel door does not respond, consult the owner's manual or contact a Chevrolet dealer for guidance.

Summary

Opening the gas tank on a 2022 Chevy Malibu usually involves an interior fuel-door release on the driver’s door, or a capless exterior-release design that you open from the outside. Ensure the car is unlocked and in Park, then follow the appropriate steps to unlatch and open the door, fuel, and then close the door securely. When in doubt, refer to the owner’s manual or contact a dealer for specific guidance for your trim.
