How to change rear wiper arm on 2016 Honda CRV?

The rear wiper arm on a 2016 Honda CR-V can be replaced by removing the retaining nut beneath a small cap, sliding the arm off its splined shaft, and then installing a new arm in the correct orientation before reattaching the nut and blade. This is a doable DIY task with basic hand tools.

What you'll need

Gather these items before you start to ensure a smooth replacement and to minimize trips back to the toolbox.

  • Replacement rear wiper arm compatible with 2016 Honda CR-V (and the correct passenger-side rear arm if needed)

  • Rear wiper blade (optional, if you’re replacing the blade along with the arm)

  • Flat-head screwdriver (to pry off the dust cap)

  • Socket wrench with a metric socket (commonly 12 mm or 14 mm; size may vary by vehicle)

  • Rags or a small towel (to wipe the shaft and keep the area clean)

  • Penetrating oil (optional, for a stubborn fitting)

Having the right parts and tools on hand helps avoid damage to the arm or shaft and speeds up the process.

Removal steps

These steps describe how to safely remove the old rear wiper arm. If a cap or nut is difficult to access, use the flat-head screwdriver gently to lift the cap without scratching the glass or paint.

  1. Turn the ignition off and gently raise the rear wiper arm away from the rear window so it sits in a service position.

  2. Remove the small plastic dust-cap on the center of the wiper arm hub to expose the retaining nut.

  3. Use the appropriate socket to loosen and remove the retaining nut while holding the wiper arm so it doesn’t spin.

  4. Carefully slide the wiper arm off the splined shaft. If it’s stubborn, apply a little penetrating oil to the seam and work it loose by gently wiggling while pulling straight off.

  5. Inspect the shaft for any damage, corrosion, or a washer/spacer that may have been used and set it aside with the arm if present.

  6. Clean the shaft and the bore on the new arm’s inner surface to ensure a clean fit and proper seating.

  7. Set the old arm aside and compare with the new arm to confirm correct fit and orientation. Do not force the arm onto the shaft if it doesn’t slide on smoothly.

  8. Proceed to install the new arm (see installation steps below).

With the old arm removed, you’re ready to prepare the new arm for installation and verify correct alignment before reassembly.

Installing the new arm

Install the new arm by aligning it with the shaft’s spline pattern and seating it fully onto the shaft. Reinstall the washer/spacer if one was present, then snug the retaining nut securely. Reattach the dust cap to keep dirt out of the hub.

  • Slide the new arm onto the splined shaft, ensuring it seats fully and is oriented so the blade lies in the proper parked position when the wipers are at rest.

  • Reinstall any washers or spacers exactly as they were on the original arm.

  • Thread the retaining nut onto the shaft and snug it by hand, then use the socket to tighten just enough to remove play. Do not overtighten, which can strip the shaft or damage threads.

  • Snap the dust-cap back into place to protect the nut and shaft from dirt and moisture.

  • If you’re replacing the blade as well, attach the new blade to the new arm according to the blade’s instructions, ensuring the blade is perpendicular to the glass when parked.

Once installed, visually confirm the arm sits in the correct parked position and the blade would clear the window frame properly when in operation.

Post-install checks

Before you finish, perform these quick checks to ensure proper operation and safety:

  • Turn on the ignition and operate the rear wiper at low and high speeds (if applicable) to confirm smooth movement and no rubbing against the glass or frame.

  • Ensure the wiper parks in its resting position without binding or contacting the window edge.

  • Inspect for unusual looseness or play in the arm; re-torque the nut slightly if necessary and re-check.

A proper test ensures long-term reliability and helps catch installation issues early.

Summary

Replacing the rear wiper arm on a 2016 Honda CR-V involves removing a small protective cap, loosening a retaining nut, lifting the arm off the splined shaft, and installing a new arm in the correct orientation before reassembling and testing. With the right tools and a careful approach, this is a straightforward job that can restore proper wiper function and blade health. If the arm remains stubborn or you encounter stripped threads, consult a professional mechanic or a Honda service center.
