How do you turn on the interior lights in a Honda Civic?

To turn on the interior lights in a Honda Civic, adjust the overhead dome light switch to ON, or set it to DOOR to have them illuminate when a door opens; map lights can be pressed individually to illuminate.

Where to find and how the main dome light works

In most Civics, the primary interior dome light sits in the overhead console between the sun visors. The switch on the dome has three positions: ON, DOOR, and OFF. This arrangement controls when the lights come on and how they behave as doors are opened or closed.

  • Set the dome switch to ON to keep the interior lights lit regardless of whether a door is open or closed.

  • Set the dome switch to DOOR to have the lights turn on automatically when any door is opened and turn off after the door closes (operating behavior can vary slightly by model year).

  • Set the dome switch to OFF to disable the dome light entirely, so it will not illuminate unless triggered by map lights or another switch.

With the main dome light configured, you commonly still have separate map lights that can be turned on manually by pressing the corresponding light lens or button on each side of the overhead console.

Using map lights and other interior lighting

Beyond the main dome light, Civics typically offer two map lights in the overhead area, one on each side of the overhead console. These are individually toggleable and do not typically support dimming on standard trims.

  • Press the left map light lens or button to turn on the driver's map light; press again to turn it off.

  • Press the right map light lens or button to turn on the passenger's map light; press again to turn it off.

  • Some trims include additional rear or ambient lighting; these are controlled by their own switches and may be limited to higher-end models.

Note that brightness may be limited and is not generally adjustable for map lights. If you want overall cabin brightness, you may adjust the instrument panel or climate-control lighting settings, depending on model year and trim.

What to do if interior lights won’t come on

If the lights fail to illuminate as expected, start with the basic settings: confirm the dome switch is not in OFF, try DOOR, and test by opening a door. If lights still fail to work, a blown fuse or a faulty door latch sensor may be to blame. Check the interior-light fuse (often labeled "DOME" or "INTERIOR LIGHTS") in the vehicle's fuse box, and consult the owner’s manual for exact locations. If the problem persists, a dealer or qualified technician should diagnose the electrical system.

Summary

For most Honda Civics, interior lighting is controlled by a three-position dome switch—ON, DOOR, OFF—located in the overhead console, plus individual map lights on each side of the console. Setting to ON keeps lights on, DOOR activates them with door openings, and OFF disables them. Map lights are toggled by pressing their lenses. If lights do not operate as expected, check the switch position and fuses, and seek professional help if needed.
