How do you pop the hood of a Honda Odyssey?

Opening the hood on a Honda Odyssey is a routine task for inspection or maintenance. In most modern Odysseys the process is straightforward: pull the interior release, then unlatch the front edge; the hood is held up by gas struts, so you typically won't need a prop rod.

Inside the Cabin: The First Release

Begin with safety in mind: park on a level surface, engine off and cooled, and engage the parking brake. The interior hood release is located under the dash on the driver's side and is clearly marked with a hood icon.

Follow these steps to release the hood from inside the vehicle.

  1. Park on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake. If the engine has been running, let it cool before you touch components under the hood.

  2. From the driver's seat, locate the interior hood release lever under the dash near the left knee and pull it firmly. You should hear the hood pop and rise slightly at the front.

  3. Move to the front of the vehicle and stand in a stable position in front of the grille.

  4. Locate the secondary latch along the center edge of the hood, just above the grille. Release it by pressing or lifting the lever as directed by your model; you may need to push the latch to the side or upward to disengage it.

  5. With the latch released, lift the hood from its center. If your Odyssey uses gas-filled struts, the hood will stay open on its own. If your vehicle uses a prop rod (older configurations), remove it from its clip and place it into the support notch on the hood to hold it up.

  6. Confirm the hood is securely supported before inspecting the engine bay.

Note: On most modern Odysseys, no prop rod is required because the hood is supported by side-mounted gas struts. If you do see a rod, handle it gently to avoid bending the clip or the hood edge.

Before You Work: Safety and Closing the Hood

When you're finished, close the hood by reversing the process: lower it so it's about a hand's width above the latch, then press the center until you hear a decisive click. Always verify the hood is fully latched by gently lowering one more inch and pulling on the hood to ensure it's secure. Do not slam the hood or press on it unevenly to avoid bending the latch or hood.

Model variations and quick tips

Most Honda Odysseys built in the last decade use hydraulic gas struts to hold the hood open, which means you don't need to prop the hood. Older or specialty trims may differ slightly in latch feel or location, but the same general steps apply. If you are unsure, consult your owner’s manual for your exact model year and trim.

Summary

To pop the hood of a Honda Odyssey, pull the interior hood release, release the front center latch, and lift. The hood will typically stay open thanks to gas struts, and no prop rod is required. Always ensure the engine is cold and the hood is securely supported before accessing the engine bay, and close it with a firm, centered press until you hear the latch click.
