Bulb types used in the 2018 Nissan Altima
- Low beam: H11 halogen
- High beam: 9005 (HB3) halogen
- Fog light (if equipped): H11 or H16, depending on trim
Always confirm the bulb type for your specific trim by checking the bulb packaging, the old bulb, or the owner’s manual before purchase.
Step-by-step headlight bulb replacement
- Park on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the keys. Engage the parking brake. Wear gloves or use a clean cloth to handle the new bulb to avoid oil contamination on the glass.
- Open the hood and locate the rear of the headlight housing. Remove the rubber dust cap by twisting or pulling it away from the back of the assembly.
- Find the electrical connector on the back of the bulb. Depress the locking tab and unplug the connector from the bulb.
- Remove the old bulb. If there is a retaining ring, twist it counterclockwise to unlock and pull the bulb straight out. Some models use a bracket or spring clip—unclip or unfasten as needed.
- Install the new bulb. Handle the bulb by its base, insert it into the socket, align any tabs, and twist the retaining ring (if present) clockwise to lock. Reconnect the wiring harness.
- Replace the dust cap securely over the back of the headlight.
- Test the new bulb by turning on the headlights to ensure the low and high beams function correctly. If it doesn’t illuminate, recheck the connections and verify you installed the correct bulb type.
- Finish by restoring any components moved for access (air intake duct, battery, etc.) and ensure everything is secure.
In some trims, reaching the back of the headlight may require moving or removing nearby components such as the air intake duct or, in rare cases, the battery. If access is tight, consult the owner’s manual or a professional for assistance.
Safety and maintenance tips
Always handle bulbs with gloves or a clean cloth to prevent skin oils from shortening bulb life. Replace in pairs when possible to maintain even lighting, and dispose of old bulbs properly. If you’re unsure about performing the replacement yourself, a dealer or qualified technician can complete the service quickly.
