Where is the power steering fluid in a Cadillac CTS?

In most Cadillac CTS models with hydraulic power steering, the reservoir is located in the engine bay on the passenger-side near the firewall. Some CTS models use electric power steering and have no reservoir to check.

The exact location can vary by model year and engine, so use this guide to identify whether your CTS uses hydraulic or electric steering and where to find the fluid reservoir if applicable. Always refer to your owner’s manual for the precise specification and location for your year.

Hydraulic power steering CTS (most older models)

The following guidance covers CTS models with a hydraulic power steering system. If your vehicle uses electric power steering, skip to the EPAS section.

What the reservoir looks like and where to find it

Look in the engine bay on the passenger side, near the firewall. The reservoir is a small translucent plastic bottle with a cap labeled Power Steering Fluid (often with a steering-wheel icon). Some CTS reservoirs are integrated without a clear dipstick, while others have level marks on the side or a small dipstick on the cap.

Before you start, locate the reservoir and check the fluid level when the engine is cold and the hood is propped open.

  • Open the hood and secure it safely.

  • Identify the power steering fluid reservoir (look for a cap labeled Power Steering or a steering-wheel icon).

  • Check the fluid level against the markings on the side of the reservoir or on the dipstick (if equipped).

  • Refill with the correct fluid if the level is low, using the GM-approved power steering fluid (often Dexron VI is recommended for newer CTS models). Do not mix fluids unless specified by GM.

  • After refilling, start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to circulate the fluid and bleed air.

  • Inspect for leaks around hoses, clamps, and the reservoir cap. Recheck the level once the system is bled.

  • Secure the cap and close the hood.

If the reservoir is difficult to locate, the level stays consistently low, or you notice leaks, a handler or mechanic should inspect the system for damage, leaks, or a failing pump.

Electric power steering CTS (EPAS)

Some CTS models use electric power steering, which does not use a hydraulic fluid reservoir. In these vehicles, the steering assist is provided by an electric motor integrated with the steering rack or column and controlled by a computer.

To verify EPAS, look for the absence of a hydraulic power steering pump and reservoir under the hood. The steering assist component will be an electric motor mounted at or near the steering rack or column, with electrical connectors and a related warning light on the dash if there’s a fault. If you’re experiencing steering issues on an EPAS CTS, consult the dealer or service technician for diagnostics and possible software or motor replacement.

Summary

Most older Cadillac CTS models with hydraulic steering place the power steering fluid reservoir in the engine bay on the passenger side near the firewall. If your CTS uses electric power steering, there is no reservoir in the engine bay. Always verify your model year in the owner’s manual and follow GM’s recommended fluid type. If in doubt, have a professional inspect the system to prevent damage from leaks or incorrect fluid.
