Where is the oil filter in a 2017 RAV4?

The oil filter on a 2017 RAV4 with the 2.5L engine is located in the engine bay on the passenger side, inside a cylindrical cartridge housing near the oil pan.

In this article, we describe where the filter sits, how to access it, and what you’ll need to know to replace it. The RAV4 uses a cartridge-type oil filter housed in a small canister that you remove to replace the filter cartridge inside. Exact placement can vary slightly by trim or market, so consult your owner’s manual if you’re unsure.

Where to look in the engine bay

To locate the filter, start by inspecting the passenger side of the engine block near the front, close to the oil pan. In many configurations, the filter is mounted in a small housing and can be obscured by hoses or wiring. If it isn’t visible from above, you’ll often find it accessible from underneath once you remove the front lower splash shield.

Note: Some trims or regional versions may place the housing slightly differently, but the cartridge-style filter is typically on the side of the engine rather than up in the top of the bay. If you’re unsure, check the service manual for your exact VIN and market.

Before beginning any inspection, make sure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, the engine is cool, and you have the proper tools and a drain pan ready.

  • Park on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Allow it to cool before touching any engine parts.

  • Open the hood and look to the passenger side of the engine block, near the oil pan, for a cylindrical housing with a removable cap or cover.

  • If you cannot see the filter from above, prepare to remove the front lower engine splash shield for better access from beneath.

Accessing the cartridge filter from beneath is common on many modern Toyotas, as it keeps the filter away from the hottest areas and makes replacement more straightforward with the right tools.

How to replace the oil filter (cartridge type)

Before you start, ensure you have the correct oil filter cartridge, a new O-ring for the cap, fresh engine oil, and the appropriate tools. Follow safety procedures and dispose of used oil and filters at a recycling facility.

  • Raise the vehicle safely and remove the necessary undercarriage shields to access the filter housing from below.

  • Place a drain pan under the oil area and prepare for any oil that may spill when you open the filter housing.

  • Loosen and remove the filter cap using the appropriate wrench or socket, then extract the old cartridge from the housing.

  • Install the new cartridge, replace the cap with a new O-ring, and tighten to the specified torque.

  • Reinstall the shields, lower the vehicle, and refill the engine with the recommended oil to the correct level. Check for leaks after startup.

Always recycle used oil and filters responsibly. If you’re not comfortable performing the replacement yourself, a qualified technician can handle it quickly and correctly.
