Where is the air filter on Mazda CX-5?

There are two air filters in a Mazda CX-5: the engine air filter in the engine bay and the cabin air filter behind the glove box.

Engine air filter location

The following steps describe how to locate and replace the engine air filter in a CX-5.

  • Open the hood and locate the rectangular black plastic air box in the engine bay, usually on the passenger side, connected to the large intake hose that runs toward the throttle body.

  • Unclip or unscrew the lid of the air box to access the inside. Some models use snap clips; others use small screws.

  • Remove the old filter and note its orientation. The filter typically has an airflow arrow that should point toward the engine when installed.

  • If the box is dirty, wipe it clean with a dry cloth before placing the new filter.

  • Insert the new filter, reseat the lid, and resecure the clips or screws. Reattach any intake hose if it was loosened.

Replacing the engine air filter helps maintain engine performance and efficiency. Check your owner's manual for recommended replacement intervals and inspect the box if you notice a decrease in power or unusually rough idling.

Cabin air filter location

The following steps describe how to locate and replace the cabin air filter, which cleans the air inside the vehicle cabin.

  • Open the glove box and, if present, gently release the glove box damper or side stops to allow the box to lower.

  • Behind the glove box you’ll find a panel or cover concealing the cabin air filter. Remove any screws or clips securing the panel.

  • Take out the old cabin filter and note its orientation. The filter has an arrow indicating the direction of airflow toward the blower unit.

  • Insert the new filter with the arrow facing the correct direction, ensuring it sits flat in the housing.

  • Reinstall the cover and restore the glove box to its original position.

Replacing the cabin air filter improves interior air quality and HVAC performance. If you drive in dusty or polluted areas, consider checking or replacing the cabin filter more frequently according to Mazda’s guidance or your manual.

Summary

The Mazda CX-5 has two distinct air filters: the engine air filter in the passenger-side engine bay air box and the cabin air filter behind the glove box. Access and replace each filter by following the steps above, and consult the owner’s manual for model-year-specific guidance and replacement intervals. Regular maintenance helps preserve engine efficiency and interior air quality.
