What kind of power steering fluid do you put in a Toyota Camry?

In most Toyota Camrys with hydraulic power steering, you use automatic transmission fluid (ATF) of a Toyota-approved specification. Newer Camrys with electric power steering require no power steering fluid at all.

How to tell which system your Camry has

To determine whether your Camry uses hydraulic or electric power steering, consult the owner’s manual and check under the hood. If you find a dedicated power steering reservoir labeled PSF (Power Steering Fluid) and you see ATF-like fluid, you likely have hydraulic power steering. If there is no reservoir or the vehicle is equipped with an electric assist system (EPS), no PS fluid is used.

Hydraulic power steering: which fluids are acceptable

If your Camry uses hydraulic power steering, the following fluids are commonly acceptable depending on model year. Always follow the exact specification printed on your reservoir cap or in the owner’s manual, and do not mix fluids.

  • Dexron II/III automatic transmission fluid (older Camry PS systems)

  • Dexron VI automatic transmission fluid (modernized, widely compatible as a replacement where approved)

  • Toyota Genuine Power Steering Fluid or Toyota ATF WS (World Standard) as specified for your model year

Note: Do not use motor oil, silicone-based fluids, or other brands not approved for power steering systems. If the reservoir cap or owner’s manual specifies a particular ATF type, follow that exact specification to avoid pump wear or steering irregularities.

Special case: electric power steering

Many Camry models from the mid-2010s onward use electric power steering (EPS). If your vehicle has EPS, there is no power steering fluid to add or replace. The system relies on an electric motor and control module, and any issues typically require electrical diagnostics or component service rather than fluid replacement.

What to do if you’re unsure

If you’re uncertain about which system your Camry has or which fluid to use, check the owner’s manual or contact a Toyota dealer or qualified mechanic. When you bring the vehicle in, have the VIN handy to confirm the exact PS specification for your exact model and production region, as options can vary by year and market.

If you’re topping off, use only the recommended fluid type, and avoid mixing different ATF specifications. For hydraulic systems, address leaks promptly rather than repeatedly topping off, to protect the power steering pump and rack.

Summary

There isn’t a single universal answer for all Camry models. Hydraulic power steering typically uses ATF, with Dexron II/III or Dexron VI and/or Toyota Genuine Power Steering Fluid (often aligned with ATF WS) as common options depending on the year. Many newer Camrys use electric power steering and require no PS fluid at all. Always verify the exact spec from the owner’s manual or the reservoir cap to ensure you use the correct fluid and avoid potential damage.
