How to reset dash lights on 2016 Honda CR-V?

There isn’t a single button that resets every dash light on the 2016 CR-V. Depending on what you’re trying to reset, you may adjust the instrument backlighting, reset maintenance reminders, or clear warning indicators with the appropriate tool. This guide walks you through the common scenarios and how to handle them.

Understanding what "dash lights" can mean on the 2016 CR-V

In practical terms, "dash lights" can refer to three broad categories: instrument panel backlighting, maintenance minder reminders (oil life and service intervals), and warning indicator lights (Check Engine, ABS, VSA, etc.). Knowing which category you want to reset will guide the correct procedure.

Resetting the instrument panel brightness

Instrument panel illumination is controlled by a dimmer control. There isn’t a formal reset for brightness—just adjust the setting to your preferred level. If the lights aren’t responding, check the dimmer first and then look at fuses or wiring if necessary.

  1. Turn the ignition to ON (engine off) so the dash is powered but the car isn’t running.

  2. Locate the dimmer/brightness control wheel or knob on the instrument panel, usually near the left side of the steering column.

  3. Rotate the control to increase or decrease brightness until the gauges and illumination appear at your preferred level.

  4. If there’s no response, inspect the fuse labeled for Instrument Panel Illumination or Dash Lights and replace if blown, then retry.

Note: This adjustment affects only the brightness of the dash illumination. There is no separate "reset" procedure for brightness beyond setting it to your preference.

Resetting Maintenance Minder and Engine Oil Life

The Maintenance Minder system tracks service needs and oil life. You can reset the Engine Oil Life indicator after you’ve performed an oil change or service so the system starts from 100%. This reset is a deliberate maintenance action, not a diagnostic fix.

  1. Turn the ignition to ON (II) with the engine off.

  2. On the instrument panel display, use the SEL/RESET or select/reset knob to cycle until Engine Oil Life is shown.

  3. Press and hold the SEL/RESET knob for about 10 seconds until the display changes to Engine Oil Life 100%.

  4. Release the knob, turn the ignition OFF, then start the engine to confirm the Oil Life reads 100%.

Consequence: Resetting the Engine Oil Life doesn’t fix mechanical issues; it merely restarts the maintenance countdown after appropriate servicing.

Resetting warning lights (Check Engine, ABS, etc.)

Warning lights indicate real issues that may require service. Clearing them without fixing the root cause is not advised, and some lights may return or stay on if the fault persists. If you need to clear a light after repairs, use an appropriate diagnostic tool or consult a technician.

Before proceeding, ensure the vehicle is safe to work on and the underlying issue has been addressed. Then consider these options:

  • Use an OBD-II scan tool to read and clear codes. This is the recommended method for warning lights once repairs are completed.

  • Connect the tool to the OBD port under the dash, turn the ignition to ON, follow the tool’s prompts to Clear Codes or MIL reset, then disconnect and test drive to see if the light reappears.

  • Disabling lights by disconnecting the battery is generally not recommended, as it can reset other systems and may require reprogramming radio and other settings.

If a warning light remains on after attempting a reset, or if a light comes back on shortly after repair, have the vehicle inspected by a qualified technician to diagnose the fault.

Summary

Resetting dash lights on a 2016 CR-V depends on what you’re trying to reset. For dash brightness, use the dimmer control; for maintenance reminders, reset the Engine Oil Life via the instrument cluster; and for warning lights, use an OBD-II scanner after repairs or seek professional help. Always address the underlying issue before attempting to clear warning indicators.
