How to open Civic engine cover?

Open the hood, then remove the plastic engine cover by undoing its fasteners.

The Civic’s plastic engine cover sits on top of the engine bay and is retained by a mix of bolts, screws, and/or clips. Depending on the model year and trim, some Civics use a single center fastener plus a few clips, while others rely mainly on clips. If your car doesn’t have a removable engine cover, you won’t need to do anything beyond the hood. The following guidance covers common approaches on recent Civics (roughly 2016 onward) and notes generation differences where relevant.

Open the hood

Before you reach the engine cover, you must first access the engine bay by opening the hood. The process is similar across most Civic generations, with minor variations in latch placement.

Before each list, here is a brief overview of what you’ll do to open the hood, then remove the cover.

  • Park on level ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool if it’s hot.

  • Inside the cabin, pull the hood release lever (usually located near the driver’s side kick panel). You should hear the hood pop up slightly.

  • Go to the front of the car and locate the secondary safety latch under the hood edge. Lift or slide the latch to release the hood fully, then lift the hood and let it rest on the hood support (gas struts) or a prop rod if your model uses one.

  • If your Civic uses gas shocks, the hood will hold itself up. If there’s a prop rod, secure it in the marked hole to keep the hood open.

With the hood open and supported, you can proceed to inspect or remove the engine cover if present.

Remove the engine cover

The engine cover is a decorative shield that sits over the top of the engine. Not every Civic has one, but when present it protects components and dampens noise. The method to remove it varies by generation, so check for the retention method you see on your car: a central bolt, several screws, or just clips.

engine cover retention methods by generation

The steps below describe common retention schemes. If you don’t see a bolt or screws, the cover may be clipped in place and can be pried off carefully. Always use a trim tool or flat plastic wedge to avoid damaging plastics or hoses.

  • Inspect the cover for a central fastener. If you see a single bolt or nut in the middle, remove it with the appropriate driver (often a small hex or Torx). Keep the bolt safe for reassembly.

  • Check for perimeter fasteners. Some covers use small screws (Phillips or Torx) around the edge. Use the correct screwdriver or bit to loosen them, but do not remove any bolts that seem to fasten other components.

  • If no fasteners are visible, gently pry around the edges with a plastic trim tool to unclip the cover from its clips. Start at a corner and work your way along the edge, lifting gradually to release each clip.

  • Lift the cover upward once all fasteners are released. Ensure there are no remaining wires or hoses tucked under the edge before fully removing it. Place the cover somewhere safe while you perform maintenance.

To reinstall, reverse the steps: align the cover, reattach any clips or screws, and snug any bolts without over-tightening. Close the hood carefully and ensure it latches fully.

Safety and tips

Working around the engine requires care. Keep these tips in mind to minimize risk:

  • Let the engine cool before touching components to avoid burns or soft plastics.

  • Disconnecting the negative battery terminal is unnecessary for removing the engine cover, but may be wise if you’ll be handling electrical connectors or if you’re working on electrical components beyond the cover.

  • Use a plastic trim tool or a flat, non-metal tool to pry clips; metal tools can scratch or chip plastic covers.

  • If you encounter resistance when removing fasteners, stop and recheck for hidden screws or clips. Don’t force the cover, which can damage clips or the cover itself.

  • Consult your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions, especially if you’re unsure about your generation’s retention method.

Summary

Opening a Civic engine cover generally involves two steps: first, safely opening and supporting the hood, and second, removing the engine cover by undoing its central fastener and any edge clips or screws. If your Civic lacks an engine cover, you can skip the removal step entirely. Always use the proper tools, work gently to avoid damage, and refer to your model’s manual for generation-specific details.
