How do I turn on Mercedes-Benz interior lights?

In most Mercedes-Benz models, interior lights can be activated manually via the overhead console, automatically when a door opens, or customized through the MBUX system for ambient cabin lighting.

Manual interior lights

Use the overhead light controls to turn on the main interior lights or set them to respond to door operation.

Note: The exact labels and layout can vary by year and model, but the general approach is the same. Look for a small switch or touch-sensitive panels around the rearview mirror or on the overhead console.

  1. Locate the overhead console near the rearview mirror where the map lights and the dome light switch are located.

  2. Toggle the main interior light switch to ON to keep the lights on manually. Some cars use a dial with OFF, DOOR, and ON positions—set it to ON.

  3. If you want the lights to come on when a door opens, set the switch to DOOR or AUTO (depending on your model). The lights will automatically illuminate when a door is opened and fade after the door is closed.

  4. For individual map lights, press the corresponding lamp icon or touch the light panel to turn those specific lights on or off.

Concluding note: When the switch is in ON, the interior lights stay on regardless of door status. When set to DOOR/AUTO, they activate with door openings and may fade after doors are closed or after a short delay.

Ambient interior lighting (MBUX)

Many newer Mercedes-Benz models offer customizable ambient cabin lighting via the MBUX multimedia system. This is separate from the main dome lights and creates mood lighting inside the cabin.

Before using the steps, be aware that menu paths can differ slightly by software version and model. Use the following as a general guide to access ambient lighting options.

  1. On the MBUX touchscreen, select Settings or the vehicle icon to access vehicle features.

  2. Navigate to Lighting, Ambient Lighting, or Interior Lighting options.

  3. Adjust brightness to your preference and choose a color or color range for the ambient lighting zones.

  4. Optionally save a preferred lighting profile if your model supports profiles, and exit the menu.

Concluding note: Ambient lighting controls adjust soft cabin illumination and color, but they may not directly force the main overhead dome lights to stay on. They operate independently from the main interior lights.

Summary

Mercedes-Benz interior lighting is typically controlled via an overhead console switch for manual or door-activated operation and, in many newer models, via MBUX for ambient lighting. To turn on the main lights, set the overhead switch to ON or DOOR/AUTO and use the individual map lights as needed. For mood lighting, access the MBUX settings and customize brightness and color in the Ambient Lighting section. Remember that exact control layouts can vary by model and software version.
