How do I pop the hood on my Jeep?

The basic approach is simple: pull the interior hood release, release the front secondary latch, and lift the hood. The exact steps vary by Jeep model, but this two-latch process covers most Wranglers and Grand Cherokees.

Step 1: Locate and pull the interior hood release

To begin, identify the interior release lever on the driver's side. It is typically found under the dash near the left footwell or the lower dash panel. Pulling this lever unhooks the hood from the inside and signals the exterior latch to release.

  1. Park the vehicle with the engine off and the parking brake set.

  2. Locate the hood release lever under the driver's side dash, usually near the kick panel or steering column.

  3. Firmly pull the lever; you should hear a noticeable pop indicating the interior latch has released.

With the interior latch released, you must access the front edge of the hood to disengage the secondary latch and finish opening.

Step 2: Release the front secondary latch

The secondary latch sits along the front edge of the hood, near the grille. It prevents the hood from opening unexpectedly while driving and must be released before the hood can be fully opened.

  • Stand in front of the Jeep and locate the small latch or release lever along the hood edge, typically near the center or offset to one side depending on the model.

  • Operate the latch by pushing, pulling, or lifting as required by your model; avoid forcing it if it feels stuck.

  • Once the latch is released, gently lift the hood with both hands from the center until the hood is clear of the secondary catch.

At this point, the hood is free from the interior latch and ready to be supported by its hinges or by a prop rod, depending on the model.

Step 3: Open and secure the hood (gas struts vs. prop rod)

Most modern Jeeps use gas-charged struts to hold the hood open, though some trims or older models may still use a prop rod. Here’s how to handle both possibilities safely.

  1. Lift the hood until it is roughly at a 45-degree angle from the fenders. If your Jeep uses gas struts, the hood will stay up on its own; no prop rod is required.

  2. If your model uses a prop rod, remove it from its clip and insert the rod into the designated hood-support hole to hold the hood up securely.

  3. Ensure the hood is fully supported and keep hands and clothing clear of engine components and the closing edge.

To close, reverse the steps: remove the prop rod (if used), lower the hood to a small gap, then press firmly in the center until the latch engages. For models with gas struts, lower the hood slowly and let the struts guide it down until it seats securely.

Safety notes and model variations

Hood release mechanisms can vary by year, trim, and model (Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, etc.). If you’re unsure about the exact steps for your Jeep, consult the owner's manual or a dealership service guide for model-specific instructions. If you encounter resistance at any latch, stop and inspect for damage, misalignment, or obstructions before forcing it open or closed.

Summary

Opening the hood on a Jeep generally follows three steps: pull the interior hood release, release the front secondary latch, and then lift the hood. Most newer Jeeps rely on gas struts to hold the hood up; some older or specialty models use a prop rod. Always ensure the engine is off, the parking brake is set, and your hands are clear of moving parts. When finished, reverse the steps to safely close the hood.
