How do I open the gas cap on a Honda CRV?

To open the gas cap, release the interior fuel-door latch, then open the exterior fuel door and remove the cap if your model uses a traditional system. If your CR-V has a capless fueling system, there is no cap to remove—just fuel when the door is open.

Where to find the fuel-door release

Most Honda CR-V models use a dedicated fuel-door release inside the cabin, typically located on the floor panel near the driver's left foot. In some trims or older models, the release may be on the driver’s door panel. If your vehicle has a capless system, the interior release still opens the exterior door, but you won’t find a cap to remove.

Traditional gas cap system (cap and tether)

Steps to open and fuel with a traditional gas cap:

  1. Locate and pull the interior fuel-door release lever from the driver’s side floor area. The fuel door should pop open or loosen.

  2. Go to the rear-left side of the vehicle and fully open the fuel door.

  3. Turn the gas cap counterclockwise to remove it. The cap is attached by a tether so you don’t lose it.

  4. Insert the fuel nozzle and begin fueling. When finished, remove the nozzle and reattach the gas cap by turning it clockwise until you hear a click, then close the fuel door.

Closing reminder: Make sure the cap is tightened until it clicks, and ensure the door is fully closed to prevent fueling leaks or warning lights.

Capless fuel system (no gas cap)

Some CR-V models from around 2018 onward use a capless fueling design. In these models, there is no cap to remove.

  1. Open the exterior fuel-filler door using the interior latch as you would for a traditional system.

  2. With the capless system, simply insert the fuel nozzle into the filler neck when fueling. The nozzle will engage a valve and you may hear a click or feel a brief resistance as the system seals after you remove the nozzle.

  3. Remove the nozzle when finished and close the fuel door. There is no cap to twist or reseat.

Tip: If you see a warning light or fueling issue with a capless system, ensure the door is fully closed; some models require the door to be completely snapped shut to reset the system.

What to do if you can't locate the release

If you can't find the interior release, consult the owner’s manual for your exact model year and trim, since placement can vary. In some trims, the fuel-door release is on the driver’s door panel rather than the floor, or may be a push-to-release on the fuel door itself.

Summary

Opening the gas cap on a Honda CR-V starts with releasing the interior fuel-door latch and then opening the exterior fuel door. If your vehicle uses a traditional cap, twist the cap counterclockwise to remove, fuel, then reattach and close the door. If you have a capless system, there is no cap to remove—fuel directly through the filler neck and close the door after fueling. Always ensure the door is fully closed to avoid warnings or leaks.
